The following are highlights from the Winston County Board of Education meeting on April 24, 2006.

The Board accepted payrolls and expenditures, Bank Reconciliations, and Financial Statements for March 2006.

Two Sessions of countywide summer school were approved and will be held on Lynn High School Campus.  First Session is June 5-23, and Second Session is June 26-July 17 (no school on July 4).  Cost for each session is $180.00 for Winston County Students and $250.00 for out-of-county students.

The following students and personnel were commended:

§     Addison High School 4-H Skeet Team State Champions:  Jonathan Adams, Kody Dickerson, Lance Robinson, Ethan Shaddix.

§     Northwest Alabamian Basketball All Stars – Lana Pigg, Addison; Jessy Willingham, Addison; Maggie Finley, Lynn;  Ashton Carter, Meek;  Britney Howton, Meek;  Kayla Anthony, WCHS;  Scott Curd, Addison High Teacher/Coach, Coach of the Year.

§     Luke Bryant, Meek High School Student, chosen from Cullman Electric Youth Tour as a state representative to attend an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C.

§     Lance Mailloux, Meek High School Student, accepted to the Honors Program at UAB.

Approval was given for the following field trips:

§         D.S. Middle School Students to attend performance of gifted class play at Looney’s Indoor Theatre.

§         Meek Elementary sixth grade classes to attend Huntsville Space and Rocker Center.

§         Meek High School FCCLA to attend Alabama Adventures Math & Science Day in Bessemer.

§         Meek High School National Honor Society to attend Vision Land Math & Science Day in Birmingham.

The following Board Policies were approved or are being considered:

·        Consider revision of the following policies:

·        GALDC/DJCA – Payroll Checks for Personnel

·        JGCC/GAMAA – Communicable Disease

·        GAM – Possession of Firearms by Personnel

·        Consider new policy JGHA – Wellness Policy

·        Approve revision of Policy IFBD – School Libraries

Personnel Items approved are as follows:

§         Granted sick leave days for on the job injury to Angela McCullar, lunchroom worker at DSMS/WCHS.

§         Accepted retirement of Mary Tidwell, bus driver at Haleyville

§        Approved Jenny Donaldson as Jr High Softball Coach for WCHS/DSMS

The next board meetings are set for May 15 at 4:00 p.m. and May 23 at 8:00 p.m.
