The following are highlights from the Winston County Board of Education meeting on February 23, 2006



The Board accepted Payrolls and Expenditures, Bank Reconciliations, and Financial Statements for January 2006.

Meek School was given permission to dismiss at 11:30 a.m. on March 17, 2006 for the annual Chitterlings Supper.

The Bus Bid was awarded to Alabama Bus Sales (Blue Bird Bus Company) for eight (8), 72 passenger, 2007 Conventional School Buses 

The following policies were considered for approval: IFBGCA – Parent Acceptable Use Policy for Technology, IFBGCB – Employee Acceptable Use of School Technology Policy, and IFBGEA – Information Technology Security Policy. Revisions of the following policies were considered: IFBGC – Student Acceptable Use Policy for Technology, and IFBGC-F1 – Student Technology Use Agreement Compliance Form. Approved revision of the following policies: GBI Supplement #2 – Evaluation of Certified Personnel – Principal Component, TBA – Qualifications for Bus Drivers and JGH – Child Nutrition Program

Professional leave was granted to Terry Youngblood to attend Aquaponics Workshop at the University of Virgin Islands.

Addison Third Grade Class was approved to take an additional field trip to go to Multicultural Indian Event on May 18, 2006.

An overnight trip for Addison Girl’s Softball Team to attend softball tournament April 16, 17, and 18 in Gulf Shores was approved.

Approved employment of Angie McCullar as Special Education Aide at Double Springs Elementary School.

Approved transfer of Sheila Everett from Central Office to Addison School Secretary/Bookkeeper. 

Approved Brian Heck as Jr High Softball Coach at Lynn.

Approved Jeff Sudduth and Mickey Seymore as volunteer baseball coaches for Addison High School.

Approved school calendar for 2006-2007 school year. 


The following students/personnel were commended:

 

·        Levi Tyree, Addison Elementary Student, selected to represent Alabama as a Student Ambassador for People to People Program based on academic and overall achievement as well as community service.

·        Addison Basketball Program for winning the Winston County Championships in Varsity Boys Basketball, Varsity Girls Basketball and B-team Boys.  Also the Varsity Boys and Girls Teams for winning 1A Area 13 Championships and for qualifying to play in the 1A Northwest Regionals in Hanceville.

·        Lindsey Cobb, Addison Student, for signing a volleyball athletic scholarship for Bevill State.

·        Frankie Kaldi, Lynn Elementary student, won Winston County Spelling Bee.  Local school Spelling Bee Winners are as follows:  Addison High School – Caitlin Bolinger; Addison Elementary – Shianne Rogers;  Double Springs Middle School – Harris McKinney\;   Lynn High School – Hank Harbin;  Lynn Elementary – Frankie Kaldi;  Meek High School – Michael Wadsworth;  Meek Elementary – Alex Gibson.

·        Candace Cole and Jeremy Gates, Double Springs Middle School Students, for making the Quad County Honor Band.

·        Bevill Torch Winners from Meek High School – Elizabeth Vickery, 1st place Reading and Vocabulary;  Blayne Sinyard, 3rd place Reading and Vocabulary;  Ben Tolbert, 1st place Geometry;  Zack Cleghorn, 2nd place Male Vocal Solo

·        Bevill Torch Winners from Winston County Technical Center – Amanda Baker (Lynn) 1st place in Barbering;  Candace Aderholt (WCHS) 2nd place in Cosmetology;  Brooke Hamby (Addison) 3rd place in Cosmetology;  Kathy Wilson (Meek) received a summer scholarship to a New York Fashion Design School.   Devon Rivers (Meek)  2nd place in Diesel Technology;  Ryan Prescot (Lynn) 3rd place Diesel Technology;  Bretley Clark, 1st place Electronics;  Kevin Emburg (Lynn) 3rd place Electronics; Nick Bryant (Lynn) 1st place Electronics;  Mark Fisher (Addison) 2nd place Electronics;  Nick Alich (Meek) 3rd place Electronics;  Adam Denson (Addison) 1st place Electrical Wiring;  Josh Crawford (Addison) 2nd place Electrical Wiring;  Clay Johnson (Meek) 3rd place Electrical Wiring

·        FBLA Regional Winners from Winston County Technical Center – Malarie Beasley (WCHS) Marketing;  Josh Everett (WCHS) Job Interview

·        Bevill Torch Winners from Winston County High School – 1st place Instrumental Solo Woodwind – Ashley Millwood;  1st place Instrumental Solo Strings – Aaron Snoddy,  1st place Dramatic Monologue – Anica Whaley;  1st place Male Vocalist – John Bailey;  1st place American Literature – Kaylee Bohon;  3rd place American Literature – Jenni Burleson;  3rd place World History – Ethan Walker, 2nd place Public Speaking - Ethan Lolley;  2nd place Art Competition – Sara Benson; 3rd place Algebra – Melanie Wakefield
