The following are highlights from the Winston County Board of Education meeting on March 14, 2006

The Board accepted payrolls and expenditures, Bank Reconciliations, and Financial Statements for February 2006.

WCHS Band, Twyla Ownby, Band Director, and Jeff Cole, Principal, were approved to go to Washington DC.  The band will perform at the World War II Memorial.

The following students and/or personnel were commended:

  •  Ory Hampton, Addison Student, received the Edgar Will Helton Award and a $3,000 scholarship.

  • Kayla Woodard, Addison Student, selected to participate in the 2006 Alabama High School All-Star Sports Week in Volleyball.

  • Addison Football Team for being invited to participate in the 2006 Champion’s Challenge sponsored by the AHSAA.

  • Torch Invitational Winners from WCHS:  Ashley Millwood, 1st place Instrumental Solo Woodwind; Aaron Snoddy, 1st place Instrumental Solo Strings;  Anica Whaley, 1st  place Dramatic Monologue;  John Bailey, 1st place Male Vocalist;  Kaylee Bohon, 1st place American Literature;  Jenni Burleson, 3rd place American Literature;  Ethan Walker, 3rd place World History;  Ethan Lolley, 2nd place Public Speaking;  Sara Benson, 2nd place Art Competition;  Melanie Wakefield, 3rd place Algebra.

Board Policy Items:

·        Approved new policies:

  •  IFBGCA – Parent Acceptable Use Policy for Technology

  •  IFBGCB – Employee Acceptable Use of School Technology Policy

  •  IFBGEA – Information Technology Security Policy

·        Approved Revision of the following policies:

  • IFBGC – Student Acceptable Use Policy for Technology

  • IFBGC-F1 – Student Technology Use Agreement Compliance Form

·        Considering revision of the following policy:

  •  IFBD – School Libraries

 

Personnel Items:

  •  Approved employment of Phillip Cleghorn effective March 15, 2006 as Central Office Employee to replace Sheila Everett.

  • Approved the following list of coaches for Meek School:  Baseball:  Jeff Beasley, Mike Ragsdale, Rodney Hayes, Caleb Smith; Softball:  Devin Guthrie, Terry Youngblood, Nanette Buford, Bobby Smith.

  • Approved Wes Tidwell as a volunteer baseball coach for Winston County High School

  • Authorized Lunchroom managers to work up to eight (8) additional days during summer for closing, training, menu planning, and ordering.

  • Renew principal contracts for Jeff Cole, WCHS, and Shandy Porter, WCTC, for a three (3) year period.

In other business, the Board approved extending current Child Nutrition Bids for ice cream, milk, bread, and bread products, for the next school year and approved borrowing up to $10,000 for Meek School to complete the Sports Plex Baseball Project.

The next scheduled meeting was set for April 24, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.
