The following are highlights from the Winston County Board of Education meeting on March 24, 2005

Approved the school calendar for the 2005-2006 school year as submitted by the calendar committee.

The Board approved personnel items as follows: employed Jamie Woodard at lunchroom worker/assistant manager for Meek Schools; Kim Cutcher transferred from vocational bus driver to regular bus driver at Meek; Greg Young transferred from special education bus driver at Meek; Cindy Lamb, Lynn lunchroom worker, transferred to a 6 ½ hour lunchroom position; Crystal Parrish transferred from lunchroom manager to 8 hr lunchroom worker at Lynn for the 2005-2006 school year; accepted retirement of Bonnie Wilson as special education bus driver and Wilma Patterson as lunchroom worker and bus driver at Lynn at the end of the 2004-2005 school year. Lunchroom Managers were approved to work up to eight additional days during summer for closing records, training, menu planning and ordering supplies. Mike Curtis, WCHS/DSMS janitor, was granted sick leave days for on the job injury according to school board policy GALBA.

Coaching changes were approved as follows: Employed Randy White as Head Football Coach at Addison effective June 1, 2005; Accepted resignation of Jamie Edwards as Girls Track Coach at Meek and employed Diona Kimbrell as his replacement.

 

The following student or personnel achievements were commended:

  • Blake Hughes, WCTC, State DECA Winner in Entrepreneurship Participating Event
  • 2005 Scholars Bowl Winners:
    Elementary – Double Springs Elementary
    Middle School – Double Springs Middle School
    High School – Winston County High School
  • Brig Kilgore, DSMS, 4th place in State Spelling Bee Contest
  • Lana Pigg, Addison, State Volleyball All-Star
  • Chelaine McCarty, Addison, State Volleyball All-Star
  • Lynn Elementary School for placing in the top 13 on the Alabama Dibels midyear report.
  • Meek School Torch Invitational Winners:  Zach Moore, 3rd place in American Literature; Ben Tolbert, 3rd place in Geometry Competition; Zack Cleghorn, 1st place in male vocal competition.
  • WCTC School Torch Invitational Winners:  John Blanton, 1st place in Electrical Technology; Jake Whitfield, 2nd place Electrical Technology; Greg Adams, 3rd place Electrical Technology; Mark Fisher, 1st place Electronics Technology; Charity Fowler, 2nd place Electronics Technology; Holly Noblett, 3rd place Office Administration; Dusty Key, 2nd place Computer Science, Matt Payne, 3rd place Computer Science; Brandy Dunsford, 1st place Cosmetology; Stephanie Wilkins, 2nd place Cosmetology; Robert Parrish, 3rd place Air Conditioning & Refrigeration.
  • All Family & Consumer Science and Agriscience Departments passed the Five-year State Business and Industry Certification Review.

Approval was given to Blake Hughes, WCTC Student and Bart Shannon, Teacher/DECA Advisor to attend National DECA Competition in Anaheim, California. The Board also approved overnight trips for Meek Elementary Sixth Grade Students and Teachers to attend Space Camp in Huntsville; any school that participates in State Track Meet May 5-7 in Tuscaloosa, and any school that attends State BETA Club Convention in Huntsville, April 21-22.

Professional leave was granted to Rhonda Langley and Donna Cleghorn to attend ARI Coaches Academy; Bart Shannon to attend National DECA Competition; and Shandy Porter to attend ACTA Conference.

Authorization was given to advertise and accept bids for a 48 passenger Type Special Needs School Bus and a 2005 Service Truck, according to State Bid. Bids will also be accepted for milk, ice cream, bread and bread products for the 2005-2006 child nutrition program.

The next school board meeting was set for April 28, 2005 at 7:00.
