Mrs. Sue Reed, Superintendent
Welcome
back to school!!! I hope that every student, family, teacher, and staff
member associated with the Winston County School System had a wonderful
summer. I know many of you hate to see it come to a close; nonetheless,
I also know that many of you are just like me and cannot wait to begin a
new school year and experience all that it has in store. We ended the
2009 - 2010 school year with much success, every school accomplished a
great deal in extra-curricular programs; we received grants which have
helped us to make very large strides in combating truancy, drugs,
alcohol, and abuse; and one ultimate sign of academic success is that
graduation rates are on the rise at every school in Winston County. For
these accomplishments, I want to say congratulations to our students and
their families, and to our faculty and staff.
The past accomplishments are wonderful and they are memories that we can
look back on with pride and a great sense of accomplishment; however,
one lesson that I was always taught as a child and that I would like to
pass on to the students of Winston County is, “Don’t rest on your
laurels.” The 2010 – 2011 school year will be demanding. The financial
state of Alabama and Winston County is still grim, and with financial
hardship comes challenges in the realm of education; therefore, we must
all work together to ensure that our students have every opportunity
possible to succeed.
To our students, I want to encourage you to do one thing – Try your very
best!! Study hard, utilize the library and computer labs that are at
your disposal, and most importantly, do not be afraid to ask your
teachers for help. The faculty and staff of the Winston County School
System is here for you and always ready and willing to help you. Seeing
your desire to learn and grow and then being a part of your ultimate
success is an educator’s greatest pleasure.
To our parents, please encourage your children. Encouragement from home
is the greatest determining factor to a student’s success. Review your
child’s homework, attend parent-teacher conferences, and be aware of
your child’s grades, friends and after-school activities. Please know
that our door is always open to you if you have concerns about your
child’s education.
Finally, to our faculty and staff, I want to encourage you to be
innovative in your teaching techniques. Lack of monetary support may be
an obstacle you face in the coming year, but knowledge can flow freely
if that is your desire. Be creative in planning lessons, teach students
to value simplicity in learning, and show them how much you care about
their success. If you do these three things victory in your classroom
will be inevitable.
In conclusion, I want to tell you again how very honored I am to serve
all of you who are involved in any way with the Winston County School
System. Please feel free to call on me if you ever believe we could
improve the educational environment in Winston County. Let’s look
forward to a wonderful new year together.
