Child Nutrition Program

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program which operates in public and non-profit private schools and residential child care institutions. The program provides nutritionally well-balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. This program was established under the NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH ACT and was signed in 1946 by President Harry Truman.

The USDA's Schools/Child Nutrition (CN) Commodity Programs help American agricultural producers by providing cash re-imbursements for meals served in schools and also provides nutritious, USDA purchased foods for the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
