Accelerated Reader:

About the AR Program:
The Accelerated Reader (AR) is an electronic reading incentive program that is designed to motivate students to read more and better quality books. First, students read AR books and take a computerized test. After the test has been scored, points are awarded to students based upon the number of correct answers given and the point value of the book.

The AR Challenge:
Each year the students are given the challenge of earning a certain number of points set by their homeroom teacher while maintaining at least an 85 average.

Last year approximately 70% of our students met that challenge and earned time on the Moon Bounce and Super Slide.

Remembering Our Goal:
Please keep in mind that AR is NOT all about the points. The purpose of AR is to
1.) Encourage a love for reading.
2.) Improve reading skills by allowing children to read and test on books that are on their reading level.

What Does the DSE Librarian Do?

I have a 30 minute scheduled time for each homeroom class one day a week during which we may read, have lessons on library skills, do author studies, sing, dance, learn, talk (quietly of course), have book discussions, check-out books, etc.

I am available for Cooperative Teaching with classroom teachers.

I assist teachers in locating books, videos, equipment... for classroom use.

I assist students in locating and checking out books during AR trade time.

I manage the library collection which includes:
1) ordering new books, audio-visual items, equipment, magazines, etc.
2) repairing and maintaining books and equipment.
3) weeding the collection

I administer the STAR test.

I maintain and oversee the AR program.

I am editor of the yearbook.

Encourage a love and appreciation for books and reading.

Library Check-out Policies:

Kindergarteners are allowed to check out 1 book per week during their regular scheduled library time.

First and Second Graders are allowed to check out 1 book per week during their regular scheduled library time. They are allowed to come back and swap AR books (after testing) during allotted times with teacher permission.

Third and Fourth Graders are allowed to check out 2 books per week during their regular scheduled library time. One book must be an on level AR book. They are allowed to come back and swap AR books (after testing) during allotted times with teacher permission.

Book Return Policies:

Students are allowed to keep a book out for 1 week from the day of check-out.

There is a $.05 charge for everyday a book is overdue.

Students are responsible for the total cost of the book if the book is lost or returned damaged.

I encourage the students to always keep their library book in their
backpack unless it is in their hands or desk at school. This way it is safe from siblings, pets, accidental spills, etc., and it will always be at school on their library day which helps them avoid overdue charges and allows them to swap it for another book.
