2007 Winston County Weight-Lift-A-Thon Winston County won the overall competition DSMS students that placed: 114 lb Division-Josh K - 1st place 158 lb Division-Tyler M - 2nd place with 645 total lbs. lifted. 132 lb. Division-Codi V - 3rd place 220 lb. Division-Heath S - 1st place with 675 total lbs. lifted. |
DOUBLE SPRINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES MERIT AWARD AT STATE JOURNALISM CONVENTION
The Alabama Scholastic Press Association awarded the annual critique/judging
results at the State journalism Convention Feb. 16, 2007. The convention was
held at the University of Alabama. Double Springs Middle School received a Merit
Award for the 2006 yearbook Visions- Volume V. The book contained 96 all- color
pages and was produced using a program called Jostens Yearbook Online. Digital
35mm pictures were stored in an image library and accessed as needed. Students
used the Internet site to view, create, And submit pages. The Co-editors were:
Jordan Courington and Candace Cole. The staff consisted of 40 students in grades
6-8 that collaborated with their sponsors, Gina Courington and Dianna Cole, to
produce an quality yearbook with the theme, "Only time will tell." Double
Springs Middle School was the only middle school in Alabama to receive
recognition at this event.
Congratulations to Gracie Pruitt, a sixth grade student. Gracie won Honorable
Mention in the Alabama PALS (People Against a Littered State) Poster Contest.
She entered the contest in the spring of 2007. She will be invited to the
Governor's Awards Program on November 21st in Montgomery.
March 15-16 Jr. Beta state Convention in Huntsville-One team and six individual
students placed in state competitions from Double Springs Middle and Winston
County High. More than 55 schools from across the state were at the convention.
They will be traveling to Nashville, TN in June to compete at the National
level.
From DSMS:
8th grader Tyler Cagle placed 1st in the Talent competition
8th grader Kaci Cagle placed 3rd in the Poetry competition
8th grader Jessica Bloom placed 2nd in essay competition
7th grader Rachel Roberson placed 1st in cross-stitch competition
Double Springs Middle School participated in the Sixth Annual "Light of Hope"
Poster Contest. The purpose of this contest was to promote public awareness of
child abuse and neglect from a child's viewpoint. The poster contest ties in
with other events across the nation calling attention to the increasing problem
of child abuse.
5th Grade Chelsey Reynolds, 1st Place - Makayla Bullock, 2nd Place
6th Grade Morgan Daniels, 1st Place - Makenzie Bullock, 2nd Place
The overall winner was Chelsey Reynolds.
2006 Farm City Poster Contest Winners For DSMS:
The posters will be entered into the County Contest.
The winners are all from Mrs. Brockway's Social Studies Class and are as
follows:

3rd- MaKayla Bullock
The Jr.
Beta's from DSMS and WCHS were successful in raising $520 for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association by selling Shamrocks. They worked very hard and the money
will greatly benefit those with this disability. Thanks to all who sold and
bought Shamrocks.
On
January 9th Miss Alabama, Melinda Toole visited our Middle School girls. She
talked to the girls about her platform, Character Education. She graduated from
Samford University in Birmingham last year with a degree in Elementary
Education. She is 23 years old. It was really an honor for someone like that to
visit DSMS.
