Spotlight on Winston County Schools

» Congratulations to the WCTC Quizbowl Team. They earned 1st place at the SkillsUSA State Convention that was held in Birmingham on April 17th and 18th. Team members are Ashley Yarborough, Tyler Vickery, Nic Townsend, Ethan Walker, and Aaron Snoddy.

» Congratulations to WCHS Key Club International member, Ethan Lolley who was appointed to the state office of Lieutenant Governor in District 14. Also to Holli Jacobs was selected to State Public Relations Board.

» DOUBLE SPRINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES MERIT AWARD AT STATE JOURNALISM CONVENTION

The Alabama Scholastic Press Association awarded the annual critique/judging results at the State journalism Convention Feb. 16, 2007. The convention was held at the University of Alabama. Double Springs Middle School received a Merit Award for the 2006 yearbook Visions- Volume V. The book contained 96 all- color pages and was produced using a program called Jostens Yearbook Online. Digital 35mm pictures were stored in an image library and accessed as needed. Students used the Internet site to view, create, And submit pages. The Co-editors were: Jordan Courington and Candace Cole. The staff consisted of 40 students in grades 6-8 that collaborated with their sponsors, Gina Courington and Dianna Cole, to produce an quality yearbook with the theme, "Only time will tell." Double Springs Middle School was the only middle school in Alabama to receive recognition at this event.

» March 15-16 Jr. Beta state Convention in Huntsville-One team and six individual students placed in state competitions from Double Springs Middle and Winston County High. More than 55 schools from across the state were at the convention. They will be traveling to Nashville, TN in June to compete at the National level.
They are:
WCHS 9th grade Quiz Bowl team placed 2nd. The team members were: Candace Cole, Jordan Courington, Harris McKinney, and Nick Bell.

9th grader Amber Martin placed 2nd in the cross-stitch competition
DSMS 8th grader Tyler Cagle placed 1st in the Talent competition
8th grader Kaci Cagle placed 3rd in the Poetry competition
8th grader Jessica Bloom placed 2nd in essay competition
7th grader Rachel Roberson placed 1st in cross-stitch competition

» A group of students from Meek High School recently competed in the Torch Competition sponsored by Bevill State Community College (Jasper and Sumiton campuses). Nine students from Meek High School placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their respective competitions. Students who placed 1st received a $1,000 scholarship to Bevill State Community College. Congratulations, students!

» Lynn Elementary Fifth Grade Student, Jay wins the Winston County Spelling Bee! Shianne of Addison Elementary was runner up. Pictured with Jay and Shianne is Superintendent Mrs. Sue Reed.

» During School Board Member Appreciation Month, Double Springs Elementary shows appreciation to Board Member Greg Batchelor with gift certificates to favorite restaurants.

» Congratulations to the following members of the MHS Band of Champions: Zach Cleghorn, Kella Jackson, and Tiffany Marchman for making UAB Sr. High Honor Band and to Alisha Barber, Mariah Martinez, and Paige Watkins for making UAB Jr High Honor Band.

» Congratulations to Ethan Lolley of Winston County High School for for winning the state PALS Essay Competition. Ethan will be traveling to Montgomery in November to meet with Governor Bob Riley and many other state representatives.

» Congratulations to Chase Stephenson, a junior at Meek High School, for placing 2nd in the state PALS essay contest. He will attend a banquet hosted by the governor in November.

» October 2006 - Winston County High School's Cassie Daniels has been selected as Birmingham News State Player of the Week for outstanding Volleyball play. Cassie totaled 17 aces, 77 digs, 85 kills, 62 assists and 38 blocks in 10 matches for the Yellow Jackets last week. The junior's 164 aces is one shy of the state record held by former Winston County player Laci Tomlinson, who had 165 in 2003. 

» Lynn High School's Mark Finley was nominated into the 2006 Winston County Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Finley has coached and led the Lynn Bears since 1986. He has been an inspiration to his players on the football field, on the basketball court and in the classroom. Coach Finley coached bear football until 2004 and boys basketball until 2002, now his dedication is to the girls basketball team where he leads a group of girls, two of which are his daughters.

» Congratulations to Jason Trussell, a senior at Meek High School, for participating in the Hawaii Classic, an all-star basketball competition sponsored by TourneySport USA. He was the only athlete from Alabama participating in the competition. Teams were composed of seven to nine players from all across the country, according to positions played, statistics, and physical requirements such as height, etc. Trussell»s team placed fourth overall in the tournament. Individually, he placed third in the dunk competition and his team placed third overall in the 3-on-3 event. Players were responsible for their own expenses to attend the national tournament, and Trussell would like to express his thanks to all of his sponsors for their monetary contributions which allowed him to attend. 

» Congratulations to WCHS Coach Jon Thompson. On October 14, 2006 Thompson will be inducted into the University of North Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame. 
Thompson was a four-year starter and two-time All-American on the UNA offensive line from 1992-95. He was selected All-Gulf South Conference four straight years on teams with a combined 48-5-1 record that included three straight GSC titles and three straight Division II National Championships. He was named to the Gulf South Conference "Team of the Quarter Century" for 1971-95, the Gulf South Conference Team of the 1990s and the NCAA Division II "Team of the Quarter Century" for 1973-97. He helped pave the way for some of the premier offensive efforts in school history as UNA went 14-0 in 1993, 13-1 in 1994 and 14-0 in 1995. The Lions led the nation in rushing 1993, were third in 1995 and fifth in 1992 and 1994. UNA was sixth nationally in scoring in 1993 and 1995. He was a consensus All-American pick as a junior and senior and was selected as a permanent team captain. He was selected for the 50th Anniversary UNA Football Team for 1949-98.»»»

» Congratulations to Luke Bryant, a senior at Meek High School, for being selected to attend the 2006 National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. Luke made the trip during the past summer.

» Congratulations to Ben Hamaker, Class of 2006 MHS, for placing 1st in the district level of the Alabama Penman Creative Writing Contest (Poetry Division). 

» On June 28-July 1, 2006, a group of students traveled to Greensboro, NC, to compete in various events at the National Beta Club Convention. During this competition, Marcus Posey placed fourth in the oratory event; Megan Forsyth placed sixth in creative writing; and the scrapbook team (consisting of Kayla Anthony, John Bailey, Haley Batchelor, Tara Breed, Tiffany Cole, Holli Jacobs, Ashley Millwood, Laci Tomlinson, and Bethany Wright) received seventh place. Other competitors included Sara Benson in pen/pencil drawing, Kayla Anthony in scratch art, and Lee Batchelor in mathematics. Congratulations to all of these students on their wonderful job of representing Winston County High School and the state of Alabama!
