Winston County Technical Center holds semi-annual meeting
Pam Moody, WCTC Counselor

The Winston County Advisory Council met on March 18, 2008. The council consists of local members of area businesses, industry, and the community, along with parents, students, technical center instructors and the center director.

The Winston County Technical Center serves students from Addison High School, Lynn High School, Meek High School and Winston County High School. The technical center faculty and administrators strive to produce highly marketable students based on the needs of business and industry. The advisory meetings provide the opportunity for communication between all members to help the center in preparation of their students.

To begin the night, all instructors and the counselor met with their individual committees. Members are informed of the program's philosophy, teaching techniques, new equipment being used, student progress, etc. Members make suggestions to improve the program, discuss concerns, if any, and express what they feel the program does well in preparing the student to become a successful employee. This joint effort by all involved increases the value of the education that Winston County students are receiving at the technical center.

After the individual sessions members met for a general advisory meeting with over 40 members, guests and instructors in attendance. Instructors gave an update on their programs including students' accomplishments and scholarships received. After the old business and new business was discussed there was a presentation by Rick Harris concerning the restoration of the old Houston Jail.

Shandy Porter thanked all members and guests for their attendance and the meeting was adjourned.

The SkillsUSA State Convention was held April 17-18 in Birmingham. We had many students to compete. Our QuizBowl Team placed first and will be traveling to Kansas City, MO June 25-30. Team members are Ashley Yarborough, Tyler Vickery, Nic Townsend, Ethan Walker, and Aaron Snoddy. Also, we are proud to announce that we have two new state officers, Jessica Tidwell and B.J. Flanagin, representing our school. Congratulations to everyone who participated and good luck to everyone attending nationals!

FBLA State 2007

>>The blood drive is a community project with the Winston County Technical Center and the American Red Cross that is done yearly at the technical center during Iron Bowl week.

>>On October 28th we went to the Alabama Career/Technical Education Joint Leadership Development Conference in Birmingham. This year's theme was Climb on to Success. While we were there we listened to a man named John Beede speak to us about never giving up and to just climb on. He told us the main things we need to focus on to succeed in everything we do is to have the will, get the skill, and give it time. This experience was very fun and up lifting. We went and learned new things about Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, and we can not forget the Ronald McDonald House. I hope everyone will join in on all the fun this year and next so become a member of either Skills USA, DECA, and FBLA. Many think it is all work and no fun comes out of this, but it is a learning experience and you will make very memorable moments not to mention meet some great people. One of the most goofy and yet fun things we participated in to me was doing the electric slide. So come join us next time.

>>On Constitution Day the students of the Winston County Technical Center assembled together and read the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America. This was done under the direction of SkillsUSA president Ethan Walker.

>>Nicholas B. and Malarie B. have been nominated to be the Wendy's High
School Heisman nominees for the Winston County Technical Center.

The Wendy’s High School Heisman Award is presented annually to one male and one female high school senior who best exemplify the designation of scholar-citizen-athletes.
Students are judged on their academic achievements, community and school service and athletic accomplishments.

>>The WCTC was invited to join Congressman Robert Aderholt for the 2006 Fourth Congressional District Agriculture & Industry Tour.
