News & Notes

  • This Saturday May 3, 2008, the Winston County High School Alumni Association will honor the Winston County High School Seniors of 2008. The meeting of WCHS Alumni will take place at the high school lunchroom beginning at 2 p.m. The business meeting will begin at 3 p.m. The officers for the year are President- Jeff Cole, 1st Vice President Heather Stockton-Bostick, 2nd Vice President Neal Shipman, Secretary- Vonda Townsend, and Treasurer John Larry West.

This year we have established several changes to the usual program. This is simply an attempt to boost attendance and create a renewed interest in the Winston County High School family. The new start time is just the beginning. This new time will allow more people to visit with classmates from different years and then attend class reunions with their respective classes. At this time the class of 1968 will celebrate 40 years and 1948 will be celebrating 60 years. These are the only classes who have reunions planned at the school. The class of 1943 is celebrating 65 years with somewhere around a dozen members expected at the banquet. The class of 1958 will be reliving life on their golden anniversary at 4 p.m. at the Bernice Hilton Walker Bank building downtown. If your class wishes to reserve a classroom to meet please call Jeff Cole at 489-5593.

The entire banquet is based upon this more casual atmosphere, casual dress and the idea of sharing memories across the WCHS family. The food will be more of a finger food menu and the set up for the banquet is round tables and chairs in a very informal setting with many extra chairs for those “flagpole stories” from the old school in town that captivate multiple classes and more than one generation. At 3 p m. a slightly more formal business meeting will begin, to handle the business of the Alumni Association. Special recognition will be paid to all Alumni who served in the military, former outstanding seniors and outstanding alumni, and of course the introduction of the Class of 2008. We will report on Winston County High School in 2008 and present awards for Outstanding Alumnus, Outstanding Senior and Senior Essay. After the business meeting we will go back to the socializing and storytelling until all the stories have been told or church time on Sunday morning. During the socializing and storytelling, a new feature this year will be a CD of photos from the pages of our yearbooks, beginning with the 1948 Winsaga. This feature is courtesy of D. J. Diamond at Nichols Funeral Home and copies will be on sale for $20.00 at the banquet. It should be noted 2nd Vice President Neal Shipman headed this project, so if you have questionable photos in any yearbook you will want to be present in your own defense. As you have probably noticed, the paper has run weekly photos from the yearbooks. This is connected to the CD and the identities of all photos will be revealed.

Every Alumnus of Winston County High School and those who may have attended for a period of time but moved on for any reason are welcome. The 2008 Alumni Officers invite each of you to remember your favorite story from high school and call that best friend and invite him or her to be at WCHS at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Think about your favorite story of Mr. Jesse Posey, Mr. Andy Davis, Mr. Jack Herron, Mr. James Moore, Mr. Frank Horsley, Mr. Danny Springer, Mr. Jeff Cole, Coach Doty, Coach Yancy, Coach Morrow, Coach Bishop, Coach Bell, Coach Hogan, Coach Speer or Coach Thompson and come share it with your friends and the WCHS family. The socializing and storytelling portion of the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with a business meeting at 3 p.m. This will be followed by more socializing and storytelling in a casual atmosphere. A finger food menu will be available throughout. The admission charge is $10.00.
